What does “quasi sport” mean?

(source: Time) Beer pong is not just the drinking game of choice for this century’s twenty something thinkers; it’s a cottage industry and quasi sport with mass-market 8-ft. aluminum beer-pong tables for sale.

I am not sure the meaning of “quasi sport” here. Quasi means assembling. Does it mean beer pong is a small industry and is similar to sports which need 8 feet long tables?

Also, could I say “beer pong is a quasi sport with mass-market 8-ft.”? Do I need “a” here?

Thank you!

Quasi means “semi.” Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which have been in the news lately, were quasi-governmental organizations. They weren’t really governmental subject to all the transparency laws that public bodies are held to, but they weren’t completely private, either, since they had strong ties to governmental regulation.

Quasi sport means that it is like a sport, but it’s not really recognized as a “real” sport. In your example, “quasi” is used rather loosely, which is common in American English.

Often times, something that starts out as a game between friends evolves into a real sport played throughout a large geographic area. Pitching washers, for instance, was just a bar game, or quasi sport, but it has evolved into a sport because a lot of people play it.

When a sport has gained broad acceptance, it’s no longer a quasi sport.

Again, quasi is being used loosely. “Faux sport” might be a better term.

Also, if a sport has no real skill involved, people might say that it is a quasi sport.
